Impromptu #3

Two-channel video, sound, color, 1min 16 sec loop, 2004

In Impromptu No.3, the apparently calm -yet maniacally repetitive- gesture of caressing one’s own face is intensified through the use of a modified mirror image. The fragmented movements of the mirrored image provide for deeper analysis, suggesting perhaps an even more distressed state of being, thus questioning the informal reading of the original archival medical footage. The mirror image is used here to investigate the duality of the character. The character gestural patterns are used as an introspective viewpoint. The work turns gesture into a hybrid language providing a space from the most elemental, to the deepest awareness.
